Fast cars, shaken, not stirred martinis and beautiful babes are all synonymous with any James Bond film, from his big screen debut in 1962’s Dr. No to 2015’s Spectre. Gambling is also a Bond movie staple, with the eponymous character winning enormous fortunes against all odds across the franchise’s 24 films (and counting); the plot of 2006’s Casino Royale even centres around it.

Here we’ve rounded up a list of the most intense casino scenes from the James Bond films.

1. Dr. No (1962) – Bond introduces himself while playing Chemin-de-fer

Sean Connery brought 007 Secret Service Agent James Bond to life, and the scene where the line “Bond, James Bond” is uttered for the first time has become iconic. Bond indulges in a game of Chemin-de-fer, a version of baccarat that is now seen as slightly outdated, and delivers the line to Eunice Gayson’s Sylvia Trench, a future love interest, who praises his luck. Although perhaps not the most intense casino scene of them all, it remains pivotal for introducing Bond, and other Bond actors have been measured against it.

Although the version of baccarat you see Bond playing in this film isn’t very popular in physical and online casinos nowadays, you can still try your hand at traditional baccarat. has written a handy baccarat strategy for beginners, so you can find out all you need to know about the game, and maybe even learn to be as gifted as Bond when playing it.

2. Thunderball (1965) – Bond plays baccarat against villain Largo

In the fourth James Bond film, an early version of 2006’s Casino Royale, Sean Connery’s Bond and Adolfo Celi’s Emilio Largo both try to outsmart each other over a game of baccarat in a Nassau casino. Tension is ramped up in this memorable scene by the fact that both know who each other are, but haven’t revealed this as the game takes place.

3. Casino Royale (2006) – Bond defeats Le Chiffre while playing Texas Hold’em poker

Daniel Craig’s interpretation of the suave spy arguably brought some much-missing grit back to the James Bond films, as the climactic scene where Bond defeats Mads Mikkelsen’s Le Chiffre in a tense Texas Hold’em poker match demonstrates. Bond has to wager his own government funds because a British Treasury agent will not give him the money he needs to stay afloat in the crucial game, which takes place at Casino Royale in Monte Carlo. Those watching the game, and indeed the film’s viewers, wait with bated breath as Bond flips over the two cards that seal his rival’s fate.

Casino Royale helped to fuel interest in this version of poker, and it has continued to grow in popularity in casinos around the world as well as online. A combination of luck and skill is required for players to have a chance of winning the pot.

This is by no means a definitive list, but we think you’ll agree that these are some of the most intense and thrilling casino scenes from the James Bond films. Which is your favourite?
