Did you catch Westworld’s gritty, often violent and provocative premiere last night? It appears almost everyone you know has, so you might want to get on that if you’re not caught up.

The season opener introduced us to a cast of characters, both artificial and human, who in one way or another are all struggling to understand and control their environment against the backdrop of the dawn of AI consciousness.

Episode 2, “Chestnut” airing next Sunday at the same time of 9 pm, will see a pair of guests — first-timer William (Jimmi Simpson) and repeat visitor Logan (Ben Barnes) — arrive at Westworld with different expectations and agendas.

And while Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) and Quality Assurance head Theresa Cullen (Sidse Babett Knudsen) debate whether a recent host anomaly is contagious, behavior engineer Elsie Hughes (Shannon Woodward) tweaks the emotions of Maeve (Thandie Newton), a madam in Sweetwater’s brothel, in order to avoid a recall.

The recent anomalies won’t stop cocky programmer Lee Sizemore (Simon Quarterman) from pitching his latest narrative to the team, but Dr. Ford (Anthony Hopkins) has other ideas.

Meanwhile the Man in Black (Ed Harris) conscripts a condemned man, Lawrence (Clifton Collins, Jr.), to help him uncover Westworld’s deepest secrets.

HBO have put together an “In the Weeks Ahead” clip teasing both the show’s direction and some character arcs. It all looks exciting.
