Is Barry Allen the latest villain to hit The Flash?

This new trailer dropped during Comic Con over the weekend certainly hints so.

Season 2 saw Barry (Grant Gustin), in the finale’s closing moments, making a bold, and let’s face it, rather impulsive decision to save his mother from the Reverse Flash (Matt Letscher), instead of allowing her die (again).

As a result of that action, the timeline, and the CW show, is looking a lot different heading into its third season.

For starters, Barry’s parents are together and alive. Neither Iris (Candice Patton) or Joe (Jesse L. Martin) seem to have any idea who Barry is, although the Comic Con clip shows Iris commenting that she and Barry must “be something else to each other” in Barry’s original timeline. (Girl needs to get onboard with #WestAllen asap.)

And oh yes. Cisco (Carlos Valdes) is a powerful and possibly evil(?) tech magnate, in addition to being the world’s richest man.

However, with Reverse Flash in jail, his parents alive and well, and the potential for a relationship with AU Iris looking like it could so still be a thing, Barry might just be tempted to call his new reality (referred to as Flashpoint by his nemesis) home and be done with it. Except all is not well in this alternate timeline, and even Barry, desperate for his own happy ending, is beginning to understand as much too.

But is he willing to do what it takes to restore the original timeline? Based on what we’ve seen over the weekend, it appears Barry may be dragging his heels on that front. So much so, that Reverse Flash remarks, almost gleefully, “Who’s the villain now?”

With Dr. Alchemy waiting in the wings, Keiynan Lonsdale’s Wally West taking over the superhero business as Kid Flash, an as yet unnamed demon speedster (Todd Lasance) causing headaches all round, and the attentions of a jealous CSI in the form of Tom Felton as Julian Dorn, it looks like Barry’s troubles have really only just begun.

The Flash returns to the CW on Tuesday Oct. 4 2016.
