It’s hard to walk into a shop this summer without seeing at least one pair of espadrilles available for purchase. Once considered strictly footwear for the peasant set, they gained popularity in the 1940s in a film named Key Largo where Lauren Bacall wore a chic pair of wedges. They fizzled out and regained popularity in the 1980s thanks to the casual cool of Sonny Crockett on the NBC television series Miami Vice. Yes, even men can wear espadrilles.

Espadrilles have really found their place back in fashion in recent years due to a very popular pair by Chanel a couple of years ago. Anyone whose anyone was seen wearing that particular pair, and they no longer were thought of as the ultimate shoe for yachting (or J. Crew loving) moms. They are typically made with a cotton fabric on top and a natural fiber bottom. Current styles take forms in the classic slip on and wedge variety as well as in a lace up sneaker/super casual ankle boot style.

Since they are fashionable, casual, and practically the perfect go-to summer shoe, there’s a pleathora of ways to style them. Here are four simple options to spark inspiration to give them a try, and a bunch of espadrilles of all different kinds and price points for your shopping pleasure!
