“Lucifer’s concocting a plan,” Charlotte tells Amenadiel, tossing us all the first of two eyebrow-raising surprises in this new trailer for Lucifer’s upcoming spring premiere. (The show’s officially back on May 1st, btw.)

A plan you say?

Because when we last checked in on the horned one he didn’t appear to have an agenda of any sort going on. Having rescued Mom from Hell, and having successfully played a major part in saving Chloe’s life, a distraught Lucifer then took off, abandoning his friends, family and even his beloved Lux.

Why? Because he was unable to face a reality in which his love for Chloe was nothing more than the successful results of a carefully constructed trap, that’s why.

And as we probably all suspected, Lucifer would rather run away than face that particular uncomfortable truth. Even if it’s not true. Chloe loves you right back, Lucifer. You just don’t know it yet!

But who’s to blame for this particular Chloe seduction? Why Dad, of course (well we can’t blame Charlotte for everything, I guess) who Lucifer learned had placed Chloe in his path several years previously. And speaking of Dad, would you just look at who’s about to casually drop in like it’s no big deal. Hello surprise number two!

That’s right, a major new story arc will feature Psych and Galavant alum Timothy Omundson as the Man Upstairs. Or is he? While “God Johnson” seems to know things that only his real Dad could, Lucifer will be most determined to prove this newcomer is Fake News.

In addition to the intriguing new trailer you can also catch FOX’s log lines for the Spring Premiere below. It’s called “Candy Morningstar,” by the way.

Don’t ask.

Lucifer returns Monday, May 1 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

Two weeks after Chloe’s (Lauren German) near death, Lucifer (Tom Ellis) has gone off the grid, cutting off all contact from his family and the police department. He materializes just in time to help solve an up-and-coming guitarist’s murder and introduces the department to a ditzy stripper named Candy (guest star Lindsey Gort), a mysterious new woman in his life.

While Lucifer’s mom (Tricia Helfer) desperately tries to contact her son, Chloe tries to push him away. Lucifer must find a way to prove himself in order to be invited back onto the team.
