LUCIFER: Exclusive Scoop on “Liar, Liar, Slutty Dress on Fire”
Tom Ellis is on top form when Lucifer returns from a week long hiatus on October 3.
If an episode of TV could be said to have a ‘spiritual successor’ then Monday’s “Liar, Liar, Slutty Dress on Fire” is it. The episode bears a remarkable resemblance in tone to last year’s series premiere and left this reviewer laughing out loud at moments.
Take the following example:
Lucifer (hands joined in silent prayer as he attempts to communicate with Amendiel on the spiritual plane)
Chloe (surprised): “Are you … praying?”
Lucifer (bewildered): “Yes, it usually works. He must have gone for a wank or something.”
Yes, our favorite cocaine sampling, zinger slinging, irreverent egotist is back and funnier than ever as Lucifer finally faces down his mother and gets to the bottom of those abandonment issues.
We’ll be honest. The addition of a new season 2 character initially felt like a bit of a Cousin Oliver to us. After all, we were only getting to explore secondary characters like Dr. Linda, Maze and even Amendiel in more detail towards the end of the first season, so why add to the pot now?
Imagine our surprise to discover genre veteran Tricia Helfer is delightful in her role as Charlotte Richards, Lucifer’s Earth-bound mother in human form. What makes this new addition so interesting then? Apart from being a seasoned genre actor, Helfer as Charlotte, does something none of the other characters can do, and that is join in on Lucifer’s ‘Luciferness.’ Charlotte lifts the lid on her son’s (many) neuroses, giving Ellis the freedom to really let loose. And more is definitely more in this case as these two vain and egotistical supernatural beings clash over humanity, with hilarious results.
We’ve got some exclusive scoop on the episode that you won’t find anywhere else, to share below. (No major spoilers, because that would be bad.)
Wondering what was up with Amendiel last week when he was suddenly, and rather embarrassingly, taken out of his time-freeze moment down at the precinct? That wasn’t just an episode-long blip. In fact, it marks the beginning of a whole arc for our troubled angel.
Episode 2 will shed more light on Amendiel’s troubles, highlighting just exactly what’s wrong with him (it’s kind of heartbreaking, guys) without revealing what he needs to do to set things right again.
Our guess is that this storyline will run for some episodes to come yet.
