By on August 10, 2011

If we needed further proof that zombies really are the new vampires then this is surely it.

World War Z, the big screen adaptation of Max Brooks’ best selling zombie novel and starring Brad Pitt, is on the way, with a release date of December 21 2012 just announced.

Pitt stars as a United Nations journalist traveling the world in the aftermath of a Zombie apocalypse.  The movie, now shooting on location in England, is directed by Marc Forster (Monster’s Ball, Finding Neverland) and produced by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Colin Wilson.

Initial photography was completed last month in Malta, with new filming locations in Hungary and Scotland on the cards.

The script for the epic movie was written by Matthew Michael Carnahan (State of Play) and adapted from Max Brooks’ book.

The movie also stars Lost‘s Matthew Fox, The Killing‘s Mireille Enos, The Departed‘s James Badge Dale and newcomer Daniella Kertesz.
