David O Russell Drops Drake

By on May 27, 2011

David O Russell is no longer developing the movie adaptation of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, it was reported by Deadline yesterday. Apparently Sony Pictures is still keen on the movie, and is in the process of hiring a new writer to work from the original draft done by Thomas Dean Donnelly & Joshua Oppenheimer.

The news has come as a relief to some. Fans of the Unchartedseries were left scratching their heads when Russell announced themes of family, New York gangsters and more, none of which were present in the Uncharted series for PS3. Rumors of Mark Wahlberg playing the role of Drake also left many on the fence.
The news may give genre fans some hope. Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle) and Joe Flanigan (Stargate Atlantis) were two names suggested by fans as potential Drakes via internet campaigns.

In the meantime, fans of the PS3 series can look forward to Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception scheduled to be released in November 2011.

I believe it’s spelt Wahlberg and not Whalberg!

But were they rumours that he´d landed this role? He was adamant that he had and some one has told me recently that Uncharted appeared on his IMDB page so that made it official?

Now it has disappeared and I suppose the way is now clear for fans to campaign again?

I’m all for Joe Flanigan. It’s the hair that does it! And in his former role as Sheppard, was well able to show that same Drake gritty determination to despatch the enemy and Drake humour. Oh, and they say: ‘oh crap’ the same!

Thanks for the correction. You saved me an embarrassment. Perhaps Flanigan is just easier to spell?

Mark Wahlberg did indeed land the role. I’ve read several interviews where he mentioned it, but with David O Russell’s departure, the project has gone back to the drawing board, or so to speak. Wahlberg is known for being David O Russell’s go-to man for action roles. It seems likely that they signed on to the project (and departed it) as a team.

I think Joe Flanigan would make a wonderful Drake … but often producers and directors look for a big name in movies, rather than someone who embodies the spirit of the video game character. If this were not the case, Nolan North himself would probably land the role as it’s his voice and body we see in the Uncharted series.

I don’t think a fan campaign would hurt Joe Flanigan’s chances. I’ve seen some amazing videos and artwork in the last week that really knit Joe Flanigan’s Sheppard (from Stargate Atlantis) and Nathan Drake together seamlessly. It makes you wonder why you would even think of anyone else in the role.

I like the idea of Joe Flanigan in the Uncharted: Nathan Drake Movie. He is perfect for that role..

I’d certainly like to see Joe F as Drake. He captures the spirit and appearance of the character quite well.
