A quirky and surreal trailer has arrived online for Francis Ford Coppola’s next project Twixt.

The movie is a horror thriller with gothic undertones and features a struggling writer, Hal Baltimore (played by Val Kilmer), who comes to a small town for a book signing, only to be caught up in what may be a murder mystery involving a young girl.

Disillusioned with his faltering career (He is described as the Bargain Basement Stephen King in one scene) and desperate to make money, Hal imagines the mystery might mean a new book and success, if he can solve it.

Elle Fanning co-stars as V, the ghost of a young murder victim, who appears to Hal in a series of dream sequences. The trailer’s flavor is reminiscent of  Twin Peaks and Alan Wake, in its depiction of a small closed community living in fear of the supernatural.

Twixt will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.  It is directed by Francis Ford Coppola and stars Val Kilmer (Hal Baltimore), Bruce Dern (Bobby LaGrane), Elle Fanning (V) and Ben Chaplin (Edgar Allan Poe).
