Robocop Director Plays Down Fassbender Rumors

By on September 26, 2011

What a difference a day makes. Or in the case of the internet, an hour. This morning, there was palpable buzz over the rumor that X-Men star Michael Fassbender was likely to land the lead role in Jose Padilha’s rebooted Robocop.

Bleeding Cool website translated some of a recent interview with Padilha from its original Portuguese, including the following comments the director made about Robocop.

Ill film Robocop. I’m indeed writing the script, the writer is here with me in Rio, we’ve spent over the last 15 days working together, refining the script.

“I’ll be traveling this Friday back to LA, bringing this new version to discuss with the studio, and maybe begin with the casting, selecting actors… and the idea is to begin filming in February – February or March. That’s the idea, you know, we never know in the American movie industry. We’re just delivering the project, but also we depend on the schedule of the actors… it’s tough.”

Padilha then went on to discuss actor Michael Fassbender’s potential involvement in the project.

I can’t talk yet, it’s too early to speak, but there are some actors I like,” said Padilha. “I really like the Fassbender, I’d like to talk to him – I’ll talk to him. There’s a possibility… and there’s a lot of other great actors that would play RoboCop. But that’s the idea, to film around January, February, March.

However Padilha, in a subsequent interview,  went on to explain the origin of his headline-making Fassbender comment.
“[the interviewer] asked me ‘Who is going to be RoboCop?’ I said, ‘I don’t know, I’m not there yet.’ ‘Who is going to be RoboCop?’ ‘I don’t know!’ So he says, “How about Fassbender?” I said, ‘I think he’s great.’ That was it.”
So it seems the rumors of Fassbender’s involvement were actually sparked by a journalist and not the director. If Michael Fassbender is looking for a new agent, he may be interested to know there’s an enterprising journalist out there who would love the job.
