Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has signed on to J.J. Abrams’ as yet untitled Star Trek sequel, say sources at Variety and Deadline.

Cumberbatch, whose credits include the recent John Le Carre Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy adaptation and Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, is tipped to play a villainous role alongside Peter Weller and Alice Eve.

Cumberbatch is also playing Smaug the Dragon (via performance capture) in Peter Jackson’s upcoming Hobbit movie.

According to the Variety report, Carlos star Edgar Ramirez also auditioned for the role but lost out to the Sherlock star.

The Star Trek sequel script was written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof and is slated for theatrical release in May 2013.

OOoooh! Good choice! I’m looking forward to seeing what sort of villain he plays – human or alien?
