Fresh from Comic Con in New York this afternoon: Shadowhunters‘ sophomore season will officially kick off Monday January 2 2017 on Freeform.

Along with the return date comes the news that Vampire Diaries’ Paul Wesley is officially on board to direct an episode next year.

The cast and crew of the hit show, including Mortal Instruments author Cassandra Clare, and series stars Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia, Isaiah Mustafa and Harry Shum, Jr. were all in attendance for the panel this afternoon. (ScreenSpy was also present for a series of round table press interviews following the panel. More on that a little later.)

Freeform teases the season ahead as follows:

In the January 2 premiere, the Shadow World is in upheaval as Valentine and The Circle continue to grow stronger by the minute, while our Shadowhunter team quickly becomes disillusioned with The Clave and their reaction to the recent events.

Loyalties will be tested, unlikely bonds will be made and relationships will be pushed to the limit as the Shadowhunters and their Downworlder friends make their way in a new world.

Stay tuned for exclusive Shadowhunters cast interviews coming your way this weekend. In the meantime, catch Paul Wesley’s announcement below.
