“Elizabeth, you’ll need to pack a bag. We’re taking a road trip!”

And just like that Liz (Megan Boone) and Red (James Spader) are back to doing what they do best following a season of enormous tension, uncertainty and darkness.

There’s a palpable change in the air, and we’re not just talking about the weather. The Blacklist has ditched its heavy tone (if only temporarily) in favor of lighter, funner and more adventurous fare, and James Spader thinks so too.

“His enterprises have been decimated to a certain degree, but I think he’s enjoying it to a certain degree,” laughs Spader of Red’s recent misfortunes in the following behind the scenes interview from NBC. “He enjoys life, and he can certainly find a lust for any aspect of life. He finds his way. He finds a way to find his way.”

And find a way he does. The premiere episode will see Red, now penniless, seeking less glamorous employment as a bounty hunter.

“What are you doing?” asks Liz, at one point in the premiere, clearly alarmed at Red’s less than prestigious pick of villain of the week. “We need a Blacklister.”

“Harold needs a Blacklister,” Red reminds her. “I need to pay the rent, and beggars can’t be choosers.”

Red and Lizzie’s pursuit of smaller fry will lead them to a circus and one Smokey Putnum, who skipped his court appearance following bail. It’s not exactly the kind of evil mastermind this pair are used to tangling with, and Liz is not altogether convinced, as Spader previews.

“She’s going through a lot,” he says of Liz’s recent experiences, and her discovery that Red is her father. “She’s got a lot of food on that plate, and I don’t even know how hungry she is for it. He inflicts a lot on others, and he’s not holding back now either. I think he’s always going to challenge her with new adventures.”

The Blacklist returns for season 5 on Wednesday, September 27 (8-9 p.m. ET) on NBC.
