And the Next Doctor Is …
… Peter Capaldi!
The news was announced moments ago on BBC’s “Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor.”
Capaldi (In the Loop, World War Z , Dangerous Liaisons) spoke of his relief at being able to tell people, including his daughter, that he had landed the role saying “It’s so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer.”
Betting on Capaldi was officially suspended in Britain over the weekend, with British betting agency spokesman Joe Crilly going on the record as saying “There is no point putting the market back out because as far as we and our punters are concerned, Peter Capaldi has almost certainly bagged himself the Doctor Who gig.”
A lifelong fan of the series, Capaldi mentioned that he hadn’t played Doctor Who since he was 9, but had downloaded scripts in order to prepare for the audition. Asked to sum up the new Doctor in three words, show runner Steven Moffat said simply “Different from Matt.”
Who fans might recognize Capaldi as John Frobisher from Torchwood’s Children of Earth.
