Jenna-Louise Coleman will be the new companion on Doctor Who

The Doctor’s new companion has been officially cast. The BBC today confirmed that British actress Jenna-Louise Coleman will join Matt Smith on the TARDIS after the departure of current companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill).

Coleman is best known for her role in the soap opera Emmerdale, and she will make her first appearance on Doctor Who in the 2012 Christmas special. Executive Producer Steven Moffat stated that Coleman’s character can speak even faster than the Doctor, and will lead him on “his merriest dance yet,” as the 14-episode seventh season builds toward the climactic 50th anniversary year of Doctor Who.
