NBC announced this week that megastar Liza Minnelli will guest star in Smash‘s April 6 episode “The Surprise Party,” which will also be the first episode to air in the show’s new timeslot on Saturday night.

Minnelli will be playing herself, and will sing alongside Christian Borle (Tom) in the performance of an original song which is composed by Smash producers Marc Shaiman and Scott Whittman.

The plot of the episode involves Tom planning a surprise for Ivy (Megan Hilty), in an attempt to balance their stressful work life and their close friendship. Karen (Katharine McPhee), Jimmy (Jeremy Jordan), and Derek (Jack Davenport) are reaching new heights of stress themselves as Hit List rehearsals grow nearer to finishing.

Meanwhile, Eileen (Anjelica Huston) is conflicted when Richard (guest star Jamey Sheridan) asks her to spend less time at work and more time with him. Julia (Debra Messing) is also finding herself pulled away from Bombshell, but by an unlikely source.

Leslie Odom, Jr., Krysta Rodriguez, and Andy Mientus also star, with additional guest star Jesse L. Martin.

“The Surprise Party” airs Saturday, April 6 at 9 PM ET/PT on NBC.
