Frank Darabont Walks Away From AMC’s Zombie Hit

By on July 27, 2011

Frank Darabont, creator, director and executive producer of AMC’s monster hit The Walking Dead has stepped down as showrunner of the series, it emerged today.

The news leaves fans particularly stunned, as it comes just days after Darabont took to the stage alongside fellow executive producers Gale An Hurd and Robert Kirkman as part of The Walking Dead‘s Comic Con panel.  During the panel Darabont spoke animatedly about the show’s upcoming second season.

It is unclear if Darabont has removed himself from the show entirely, or has just absented himself from showrunning duties.

Deadline suggests that after five long years of struggling to get a TV version of the Zombie comic book up and running, he never quite managed to to adjust to the daily grind of producing a TV series.

According to Deadline, talks are ongoing about finding a way for Darabont to stay on the show in some capacity.
