Months after moody crime drama The Killing was cancelled, AMC today officially announced that production on season three will begin in Vancouver on February 25th.

The resurrected show will set out to create a new mystery unrelated to the Rosie Larsen storyline which kept fans guessing ‘who done it’ for two seasons over 2011 and 2012. Staples Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman are set to return as Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder.

Veena Sud will also return as show runner.

The brief for the new season reads as follows:

A year after closing the Rosie Larsen case, Sarah Linden is no longer a detective. But when her ex-partner Stephen Holder’s search for a runaway girl leads him to discover a gruesome string of murders that connects to a previous murder investigation by Linden, she is drawn back into the life she thought she’d left behind.

The Killing, which was based on the successful and critically acclaimed Danish series Forbrydelsen (The Crime), was praised for its absorbing content and top notch acting, but the ratings began to slide throughout the show’s second when the mystery surrounding Rosie Larsen’s death continued to remain unsolved.

It is rumored that new episodes may air as early as May 2013.
