For Drop Dead Diva fans the wait has been a tense but fruitful one. Late last week Diva Executive Producer Josh Berman confirmed that Lifetime had made the decision to pick up the show for a fifth season following a series of negotiations between the Network and production studio Sony Pictures TV.

“Yes, I can confirm we’re producing a full order of Drop Dead Diva, which will air this summer,” Berman told ScreenSpy today. “Lifetime is also leaving the door open for additional seasons beyond this summer.”

The news comes as a relief to fans who have been actively campaigning on Twitter and Facebook since news of the show’s cancellation first broke.

“The reaction from cast and crew has been amazing,” said Berman. “My phone has literally been ringing off the hook – everyone wants to know what happens next!  I’m so thrilled.”

Diva’s fourth season ended on a spectacular cliff-hanger which saw Jane (Brooke Elliott)  and Owen’s (Lex Medlin) wedding ruined by a kiss, a death and the possibility of real Jane’s earthly return. With so many balls in the air, Berman admits he was anxious to give fans closure on the events of the season past.

“I was sick to my stomach leaving the fans with such a big cliffhanger and now I can resolve the cliffhanger and continue to tell the stories that I’ve been dying to tell,” he said.

With the door open for another season (Berman is currently penning the pilot episode) and potentially more, what can fans expect to see? “I truly be live that the first four seasons all platform season 5,” he said.  “All the pieces are in place for the best season ever.  I’m so energized by the enthusiasm of our fans.  I’ve never seen such an amazing fan base, and I hope to do them proud with a bang-up season – this summer!”
