In a new Screen Spy exclusive, Sarah Jones star of Fox’s Alcatraz, tells us a little more about her character Rebecca Madsen, as well as the experiences that shape her attitude to the role.

Screen Spy: The island of Alcatraz is such a huge part of our public consciousness, and J.J. Abrams is responsible for some fairly iconic TV. Couple these things together and ‘Alcatraz’ is poised to become more than just a memorable TV show. How does it feel to be part of this amazing project?

Sarah Jones: The show has potential for some really juicy mythology. Combine that with an iconic producer like JJ and the iconic prison of Alcatraz, and it’s something I’m really grateful to be a part of.

SS: Tell us a little about the cast. Who do you enjoy working with – if that’s not too difficult to answer.

SJ: I sincerely enjoy working with everyone including the fantastic guest cast we’ve been so lucky to have. It’s a privilege to be around such an incredibly talented, down to earth, eclectic group of people on a daily basis.

SS: One of the things I have always enjoyed about J.J. Abrams shows is his portrayal of tough, smart but believable and relatable women. (Jennifer Garner in Alias, Evangeline Lily in Lost and Anna Torv in Fringe to name a few.) What is it about Rebecca Madsen that appeals to you personally? Do you think you bring something of yourself to this character?

SJ: I appreciate that she’s young in her line of work, and all of the obstacles and issues that come with that territory. She has to consistently earn to be in the place she’s in. I absolutely relate to that.

SS: I can imagine that your schedule must be pretty grueling. Is there any such thing as an average day on set?

SJ: Ha! There’s nothing average about this show including its schedule.

SS: How hurt is Rebecca to discover her grandfather was an inmate and not a guard at Alcatraz? (Especially given that he is responsible for the death of her partner.)

SJ: She’s not hurt because she never knew Tommy, but she’s very much intrigued. He’s her golden ticket into the task force which affords her the opportunity not only to solve the mystery behind Alcatraz, but also personally deal with her partner’s murderer.

SS: You’re well known for your work on TV including Sons of Anarchy, Big Love and The Wedding Bells. On Alcatraz you are the star of the show. Is there a sense of ownership and responsibility that comes with that knowledge?

SJ: I claim ‘ownership’ and ‘responsibility’ in everything I do. It’s not unique to roles or projects. Not to sound like an after school special, but everyone’s a star on this show.

Catch Sarah Jones as Detective Rebecca Madsen in Alcatraz, Tuesdays (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on Fox.
