To the surprise of absolutely no one following the smash success of this summer’s Avengers movie (which has earned nearly $1.5 billion since its release in May), Disney and Marvel Studios have officially confirmed that Joss Whedon will return as writer and director for The Avengers 2.

In addition, Disney and Marvel announced that Whedon, the wildly popular creator of the cult favorites Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, and Dr. Horrible, will be developing a live-action Marvel Universe television series for ABC.

Details on the TV series have yet to be released, but many believe it may be the previously rumored Marvel/ABC project featuring Avengers characters in an hour-long drama. There has also been speculation that the show may be a new version of The Hulk.

The Avengers 2 is expected to be released in 2015.
