AMC’s new Hell on Wheels poster, featuring a very determined Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount), promises to raise hell come season two.

Appropriate words, given that we last saw Cullen extinguishing his crisis of faith by taking drastic action against the wrong man. Now Cullen is on the run and it may just be freed slave Elam (Common) who is tasked with bringing him to justice.

Season two of AMC’s gritty Western drama promises bigger sets, more dramatic clashes with the Native Americans and new developments in Cullen’s already fraught relationship with Elam, with showrunner Joe Gayton recently telling the Vancouver SunWe want to escalate the danger of Hell on Wheels, the danger of building this railroad.”

“It was a race against the rival Central Pacific. It was basically an urban slum on the prairie and people died daily. Not only was it a tough job and the railway work very dangerous, but the town itself was very dangerous. That’s our No. 1 priority this year, to make it a bigger, badder Hell on Wheels that our characters have to swim through and deal with.

Hell on Wheels returns to AMC Sunday August 12 at 9/8c.
