Move Over Grey’s Anatomy. There’s a new kid on the block, and she’s loud, chaotic and just a little bit unhinged.

CBS is dipping a toe into medical drama waters this Fall with the excellent Code Black, starring Marcia Gay Harden as a no nonsense director in charge of a crew of frightened new residents in one of America’s most notorious hospitals, where, according to the Network, the staggering influx of patients can outweigh the limited resources available to the extraordinary doctors and nurses whose job is to treat them all – creating a condition known as Code Black.

Apart from the medical trauma (and we can expect lots of trauma), we’ll get to know the docs, including the intimidating Residency Director Dr. Leanne Rorish, renowned for successfully performing high-risk procedures in Center Stage, the trauma area reserved for the most critical cases.

Among her new first-year residents are 4 new characters to watch – Christa Lorenson (Bonnie Somerville), Malaya Pineda (Melanie Chandra), Mario Savetti (Benjamin Hollingsworth) and Angus Leighton (Harry Ford).

Leanne’s confidante, and Yin to her Yang, is Jesse Sallander (Luis Guzmán), is an amiable seen-it-all senior nurse (call him ‘Mama’) who manages the residents.

Also working in the ER is Dr. Neal Hudson (Raza Jaffrey), an excellent physician who sometimes disagrees with Leanne’s “cowboy” approach, and Dr. Rollie Guthrie (William Allen Young), the energetic, longest-serving attending.

In Center Stage, life is measured in seconds, and these heroic doctors and nurses operate with speed and skill within an overwhelmed system to treat the crowds of people who are often there for one of two reasons: to die or to receive a life-saving miracle – says CBS.

We’ve got a collection of new images from Code Black’s pilot episode to share with you in our gallery below.

Things officially get overcrowded in Code Black’s premiere Sept. 30 10/9c on CBS.
