Sherlock Season 2 Gets Pushed Back to 2012

By on August 4, 2011

Frustrating news for those waiting for series 2 of the BBC’s hit show Sherlock.  The second season, comprising 3 90 minute episodes based on famous Sherlock Holmes stories, will not air until 2012.

Although it was never officially announced that the much anticipated season would definitively return in 2011, expectations were high, especially considering the first season aired back in summer 2010.

The reason for the delay seems to center around Martin Freeman’s (John Watson) commitment to The Hobbit movies in which Freeman plays the central role of Bilbo Baggins.  Sherlock is currently filming in the UK but Freeman is due to fly back to New Zealand in September.

The news came last night after a repeat of last summer’s final episode was aired on BBC1.

We think the second series will be worth the wait.  We just wish we didn’t have to.
