Smash Casting News – Spring Awakening Star Andy Mientus Joins Newsies’ Jeremy Jordan and Dreamgirls’ Jennifer Hudson in Season 2
Andy Mientus, who starred in the US tour of musical Spring Awakening and the off-Broadway revival of Stephen King’s Carrie, has joined the cast for the second season of NBC’s musical drama Smash, according to TVLine.
Mientus will play Kyle, a poor kid from Brooklyn who is trying to make it as a Broadway writer. Kyle is also best friends with Jimmy, another new character who will be played by Jeremy Jordan (the Tony-nominated star of Broadway’s Newsies). Along with these stage musical veterans, Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls) will be appearing in the first six episodes of Season 2 as well.
These additions follow the announcement in May that four of Smash‘s first season stars would not be returning for the second season under the new showrunner, Josh Safran (Gossip Girl). Brian D’Arcy James (Julia’s husband Frank), Raza Jeffrey (Karen’s boyfriend Dev), Jaime Cepero (Eileen’s annoying assistant Ellis), and Will Chase (Michael, Julia’s ex) will all be departing, along with show creator Theresa Rebeck.
Smash is planned to return mid-season on NBC.
