The Following Comic Con Panel 2012: Kevin Bacon and James Purfoy Talk Murder
FOX’s upcoming serial killer drama The Following took to Comic-Con over the weekend. In attendance were writer/producers Kevin Williamson and Marcos Siega as well as cast members Kevin Bacon and James Purfoy.
“I was thinking about doing television for a few years before this came around,” says Bacon of his role as former FBI agent Ryan Hardy, the man who knows what makes serial killer Joe Carroll tick. “It just had everything going for it – a brilliant writer and a great director – and I really also wanted to do something heroic, because I wasn’t really getting a chance to do that so much in the movies. I wanted to play a hero who had some complexity and a darker side, and that’s what this [show] afforded me. If you pick up a script and read it in one session and Bam! You just can’t wait to find out what’s going to happen next, that’s good television.”
On what makes serial killer Joe Carroll such a compelling character, James Purfoy summed things up with “He’s a pretty complex bad guy. I know it’s a bit of a cliche but the Devil really does have the best tunes, doesn’t he?” And yes, the audience responded by laughing nervously.
