This is What THE WALKING DEAD’s Rick Grimes Was Really Smiling At
What made Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) smile at the end of last week’s Walking Dead Spring Premiere?
In a word? Potential. (And not, as my Dad assumed, because he saw someone in the crowd he thought he recognized. Dad, come on! Really? )
According to recent comments from executive producer Greg Nicotero, Rick cracked a smile because he knows he’s finally found what he’s been searching for.
“He’s smiling because there’s his army. However you cut it, he’s gonna make sure that those people are on his side,” said Nicotero in a post show comment earlier this week.
Sunday’s upbeat episode was an exercise in moving puzzle pieces around the board as Rick tried and failed to consolidate his meager assets into a sizable force that could be used against Negan and all his little Negans.
And yes, we say upbeat in the full knowledge that Rick spent much of the hour being dismissed out of hand by the Hilltop’s slimy Gregory (Xander Berkeley) and the Kingdom’s King Ezekiel (Khary Payton), and found himself up against a hoard of … moody teens …? in the closing moments during his search for Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam), and Alexandria’s missing supplies.
But hey, this is The Walking Dead where every little hard won victory counts and when Rick Grimes smiles, we all smile with him.
Regardless of their initial intent, this “mysterious community” teased by AMC (in possibly the shortest log lines ever this week) may just be the impetus Rick needs right now.
All he has to do now is win them all over with some Rick Talk. Or possibly by fighting some weird looking Walkers.
Sunday’s episode is aptly titled “New Best Friends.”
It airs February 19th 9/8c on AMC. Photos and sneak peeks follow below.
