TV REVIEW: Under the Dome Keeps those Reveals Tumbling in “The Fall”

Last week’s Under the Dome focused on action outside the Dome, but tonight things are back where they belong, stuck firmly under that Trouble Bubble and giving us more answers.

“The Fall” showed Jim falling for his long dead wife again, Melanie falling for Sam’s explanation of his involvement in her death, and the glowing egg falling off those locker cliffs. This was an action and answer packed episode that left us with the feeling things are just getting started.

Reunited and It Feels So Good

Jim thinks Pauline is some Dome apparition, but she explains the whole faking her death thing. She justifies the ruse by saying she thought the Dome would follow her, like her own little raincloud, I guess? He’s ticked off big time, or Big Jim time. He blames her for how messed up Junior is.

Big Jim runs off to Pauline’s art studio where she tracks him down. He demands some answers. She explains the passageway in and out of the Dome and says she is so sorry for being gone for so long. He says says he’s sorry too, adding he should have listened to her; she was right about it all. He says he can prove he’s a changed man and reminisces about the good old days even claiming he wants to be a family again.  Junior shows up to find long lost mom and bad dad looking at a photo album. Incredibly, he doesn’t look particularly excited or confused, just numb, as he slowly hugs Pauline.

Jim abruptly rushes off, he’s sheriff dammit, and has responsibilities. Junior leaves as well claiming he’s deputy dog and has responsibilities too.

Meanwhile, we see the egg glowing in the basement while Pauline is making tea. It’s humming a tune that only dogs and Paulines can hear. She falls to her knees in pain. The sound too much.

Julia and Barbie have their own special reunion. They run into each other’s arms, slow-mo, in a wildflower covered field with romantic music swelling (maybe just the music occurred).  They kiss passionately and then… get down to business.  Reunion complete.

Angie’s Baaaaack

Joe and Norrie snuggle on the couch (ew) trying to keep warm because even though it looks like a balmy 75 degrees outside, they’re complaining of a cold snap. They realize they haven’t seen Melanie in a day and laugh about it saying, “She’s probably at Julia’s doing Jane Fonda exercises or whatever people did in the 80’s.” Yeah, I wouldn’t be concerned either, you’re only under a DOME where there’s been acid/blood rain, chubby hungry caterpillars, and super duper magnetism.

Norrie gets up and finds the egg is missing! Melanie what have you done now?

Turns out that Melanie is still with Junior for a little naptime.  He’s staring at the egg like he’s seeing it for the first time when she wakes up and decides she’s ready to go. They kiss and 80’s girl takes off, that Jazzercise class calling her name. Junior’s got that look of love or maybe it’s just that look of not having a clue of what’s going on around him.

There is nothing like a woman scorned. It can even make some rise from the ashes. Junior’s ‘killed at the locker’ love, Angie, shows up out of thin air. “Think about what you are doing,” she advises. Oh, wishing for the impossible, Ang.

Melanie pops back in hearing voices. Dead Angie disappears, but I’m sure not for long. I hope not for long. She must have a better reason to show up than bust Junior on a smooch with another girl.

The Egg Negotiations Begin

Barbie explains the whole falling off a cliff and landing into a playground thing with Rebecca, our ever scientific science teacher, coming up with a plan to get the townspeople out. It may involve something like jumping off the cliff. The problem is Julia isn’t sure if she wants out, maybe the Dome is trying to protect them. Barbie says they’ll use the egg as leverage; he’ll broker it when he goes first. Julia demands to go first reminding him that some thugs want to have their way with him.

Melanie barges in and is overly thrilled Barbie’s alive, making it seem like she’s known him for more than half a second. But she has known him for much longer – more on that later.

Julia demands the egg but Melanie says she can’t say where it’s at. Barbie bats those eyelashes and tries to get the egg location out of her. She says no way. Barbie recollects the memory of the cellar red door and how they were playing years ago and listening to their parents fight. In the span of 30 seconds Barbie figures out they’re brother and sister. Wow, really? Barbie says we’re supposed to lead people out of here, so give me the darn egg. She’s reluctant, but more willing now that the blood connection is known.

In the coincidence of the night, Sam sees Melanie out and about and claims it was Lyle that pushed her into the crater. He says he’s “so sorry for everything.” It’s a little Dateline: To Catch a Predator seeing this young girl with a not so young Don Flack looking at each other that way. Thankfully, they don’t kiss.

Hunter, super nerd, has a sort of meeting of the minds when Joe and Norrie show up. Nerdville decides they need a radar gun to locate the egg. It seems Joe’s in love again. Maybe more of an infatuation because he ditches nerd saying this is something he and Norrie need to do themselves. Hunter is disappointed because it appears he wants to get his hands on the egg also.

Barbie, Julia, and Rebecca tell a few town leaders about their evacuation plan. Big Jim shows up demanding to go first because he can get things done. Barbie is still working on Melanie to get the egg, but Jim has a little egg envy in his eyes. Who will get our little chicken jumping bean first?

The Egg Takes the Plunge

Junior tracks down Sam, vowing revenge.  He holds his uncle at gunpoint not listening to Sam’s pleas that he had no choice but to kill Angie.  Junior viciously beats his uncle saying a bullet’s too quick; he’s going to make him suffer. Dead Angie also shows up again right before Junior is going to kill Sam with an ax. She tells Junior he can’t kill him Sam still has a role to play, apparently. Junior doesn’t believe it’s really Angie. He swings the ax violently and plants it in the floor just inches from uncle’s head. So maybe he does believe it’s Angie.

Jim rushes back to Pauline who’s painting furiously, saying her head is killing her. She’s creating the image of everything in the town coming to an end. Jim says he’ll go get help and locks her in for her own safety.  As he’s about to leave he changes his mind, heading to the cellar where the egg is in plain sight now, glowing and humming.  He reaches out to it, but ZAP he’s Dome stunned back against the wall, and knocked unconscious. Joe and Norrie stroll in because the radar gun/egg detector is actually working.  Jimbo wakes up and the three take off with the egg. They get to those locker cliffs and Jim flings the egg out, plunging it to its death or to the other side.

All heck breaks loose with a sort of earthquake occurring. Former DJ and deputy, Phil, escapes the jail, Hunter hides beneath a table trying to send a message to someone, and Melanie collapses. Julia and Barbie take her to Sam. Norrie and Joe barely climb up from the cliffs and with Hunter’s help make it to safety.

The last three minutes are a whirlwind of activity, so much happening I think I blinked and missed something. This is what I caught… Phil makes a break for it off the cliff, Barbie chases after him with Julia, butthey get there too late, he’s already jumped AND there is now a bottom to those cliffs. The portal is apparently closed because there’s DJ Phil impaled on a rock formation at the newly formed bottom.

So, what did you think of all of “The Fall’s” reveals? Were you glad to see Angie back or was she under utilized? Most importantly, did you catch those previews for next week? Another disaster hitting the poor people of Chester’s Mills is coming. This time in the form of a polar vortex. AND that ambulance crash with Julia looking pretty dead.
