10 Things to Know About Suits Mid Season Return

When we last checked in on Suits, emotions were running at an all time high for just about everyone.

Ava Hessignton’s murder trial was finally laid to rest, along with the rest of the British contingent and Donna’s too-good-to-be-true affair with Stephen Huntley. Goodbye Darby and co. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. We were getting a little tired of hearing “Ava Hessington IS Hessington oil!” anyway.

Meanwhile, Jessica and Harvey kissed and made up after Jessica agreed to let go of her anger and Harvey admitted that having his name on the wall wasn’t quite all it was cracked up to be. Harvey and Scottie set sail on tentative romanic waters, following his deeply non-commital and decidedly luke-warm “I care about you” overture.  (Aw, Harvey, you shouldn’t have. No really.) Mike and Rachel also kissed and made up, a decision made all the easier for Mike with Rachel’s decision not to pursue her law degree at Stanford, but at the much closer-to-Mike Columbia.

Perhaps most importantly though, Louis and Sheila also kissed and made up, an act which fortuitously presented Louis with the opportunity to peep into the personal histories of the Harvard graduates. We giggled at Harvey’s hair, then squirmed when Louis failed to find Mike’s file. What does it all mean? Does Louis realize Mike never attended Harvard? Will his newfound goodwill towards Harvey (let’s never forget that “I respect you Louis” speech earlier this season) be washed away in his desire to out Harvey’s protege? Will the revelation affect Rachel’s future, given that Jessica strong-armed her into signing an affidavit confirming she was aware of Mike’s fraudulent position at the firm? So many questions! But also so many answers to your questions!

We’ve screened the first handful of remaining episodes from the show’s third season, and while we refuse to spoil you outright with facts that could ruin your enjoyment of what’s to come, we can testify under oath that:

1. Louis is Indeed Gunning for Mike

Don’t expect Louis to be too conflicted where Mike is concerned. Louis’ love of the law trumps his love of … just about everything else. The first two episodes will keep fans on tenterhooks as Louis searches for the real truth about Mike, while Donna, Harvey and Rachel do their utmost to stop him exposing Mike as a fraud.

2. Mike and Rachel Will Take Further Steps to Cement their Relationship

OMG, they’re adorable. We support whatever they do. And wherever they choose to do it. As long as Mike leaves that armchair behind.

3. Donna Remains Unshaken

It’s no secret we love Donna, and if you do too then you’ll be happy to learn she’s on top form (Stephen who?) in these episodes to come. Expect zingers, double-dealing, performance theater (we kid you not) and candid comments from Pearson-Specter’s most irrepressible PA, including her frank assessment of Harvey and Scottie’s relationship.

4. Harvey’s in Love

We mentioned above that this new season sees Harvey I-Want-You-In-My-Life Specter setting sail on romantic waters with Scottie – despite just about everyone’s belief that things will end badly between them. We’re not sure if it’s his choice of highly impersonal gift or the fact he accidentally makes Scottie feel like a prostitute in “Buried Secrets” but we’re kinda with the guys on this one. Don’t mix business with pleasure, Harvey.

5. Jessica’s Conflicted

Check out the second episode back “Yesterday’s Gone” for an emotional episode where Jessica is concerned. Her actions may surprise you, but the outcome may surprise you even more as it includes a tender gesture from Harvey.

 6. What Does Mike Do when Left Alone with Large Quantities of Bubble-wrap?

Make bubble-wrap hats and matching slippers of course. He even made some for Rachel too, although we don’t think she’ll be modelling them any time soon.

7. Famous Guest Stars …

… including Michael Phelps. The Olympic swimmer guests in the mid season premiere “Buried Secrets” playing himself, and cooly rejecting Harvey’s attempts to land him as a client. Scottie to the rescue?

Also of note is guest star Stephen Macht (TV and film veteran and also Gabriel Macht’s real life father) who will first appear in “Yesterday’s Gone” as Gerard, a no nonsense legal ethics professor from Harvard. You know, the one who gave Mike an A+ in his final exam. Except he didn’t? Expect Gerard and Harvey to butt heads. Spectacularly.

8. Mike’s Next Case

Mike’s first case back is an incredibly personal one that not only brings back some deeply unpleasant memories for him but some startling revelations too. The result? One very much off his game lawyer. Of course, Harvey shows support … by bringing peanuts to Mike’s deposition. This is why we love you Harvey Specter.

9. What are You Wearing?

While we would unashamedly watch Suits each week purely to see what Jessica, Donna and Rachel are wearing, it’s Harvey’s turn to raise some eyebrows with his choice of nighttime attire in the mid season premiere. Is that really what Harvey wears to bed?

10. Friendship, Trust and Honesty. Oh My!

If the first half of the season could be described as factious then the episodes going forward find our characters in a warmer and more congenial space. They may spend a lot of time reminding each other about the core values of friendship, trust and honesty, but from where we’re sitting, they don’t need to. We can see it clearly, perhaps for the first time this season.
