Following the release of the first trailers, we already had a good feeling about NBC’s This Is Us, and great faith in its ability to make us cry.
But nothing could have prepared us for the amount of tissues necessary to get through its pilot episode last night. The characters are easy to relate to, and although they’re all going through their own challenging personal journeys, they never leave you feeling weighted down by their stories. Rather, the opposite is true: as harrowing as their paths may seem at this point in time, we have been given more than a glimpse of their strength and willpower to know they will not lose hope.
And this is wherein lies the beauty of This Is Us; it does not sugarcoat life and the many obstacles we face during our time on this earth, but it acts as a reminder that they can all be overcome with enough love and forgiveness in our hearts. Check out the five major tear-jerkers of the pilot episode below!
3. Kate’s Birthday Despair
There’s nothing spectacularly bad about Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) life right now, but nothing’s spectacularly good either. She’s got a good job, a nice home and a loving, supportive brother in Kevin. But what does all that mean when you’re not happy within yourself? Kate has been struggling to lose weight for a long time, but she feels like she’s not getting any closer to her dream body. She leaves warning post-it messages on the food in her fridge as a means to dissuade her from digging into desserts with a whopping 250 calories per spoon, or finishing her birthday cake before her actual party. She regularly attends a support group for people in the same position, but nothing seems to help her shed the pounds, nor does it aid her in finding self-acceptance. Consulting the scale to review her progress has become a daunting routine, and it is clear she is already expecting to be disappointed before even stepping on to it. As she gingerly prepares for the worst, she topples over and injures her ankle in the process. Luckily, Kevin comes to the rescue and, as they sit on the bathroom floor discussing their lives thus far, they both realize their futures have hardly turned out how they always envisioned they would. This is a bitter-sweet, intimate moment between two siblings trying to make sense of their lives.
