What Has ABC Renewed, Cancelled, Picked Up For 2014/2015?

Let’s get straight to it. ABC made announcements late yesterday regarding the fate of a number of shows.

Renewed are Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, Revenge, Castle, Scandal, Resurrection, Once Upon a Time, Grey’s Anatomy, in addition to the following comedies The Middle, Modern Family and The Goldbergs.

What’s been axed? Freshman comedy Mixology, The Neighbors and Trophy Wife – according to tweets from both show’s stars (although ABC has yet to make an official statement).

New pickups include:

How to Get Away With Murder is a sexy, new suspense-driven legal thriller from Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s, Scandal) focusing on group of ambitious law students and their brilliant, mysterious criminal defense professor (Viola Davis). When the gang becomes caught up in a murder plot, it has the potential to rock their entire university and change the course of their lives.

Liza Weil , Billy Brown, Katie Findlay, Matt McGorry, Aja Naomi King, Jack Falahee, Alfred Enoch, Charlie Weber and Karla Souza also star.

AMERICAN CRIME

American Crime sees the lives of those involved in a racially charged trial turned upside-down. The new series is written and produced by 12 Years a Slave’s John Ridley, in Michael McDonald (Cougar Town).

The series stars Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton, Penelope Ann Miller, Richard Cabral, Johnny Ortiz, Elvis Nolasco, Benito Martinez, W. Earl Brown and Caitlin Gerard.

 

MARVEL’S AGENT CARTER

This, until now, top secret pilot follows the adventures of Captain America’s Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell). Set in 1946 in the aftermath of the second world war, peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad, according to ABC. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve),  Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life – Steve Rogers.

This new alien invasion drama stars Revenge’s Barry Sloane and centres on humanity’s race to defeat an alien threat who plan to use our greatest resource against us. The series comes from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin TV. Milo Ventimiglia, Lily Rabe, Derek Webster, Brianna Brown, Kylie Rogers, Catalina Denis and Kyle Harrison Breitkopf also star.

 

GALAVANT

An ambitious fairytale musical, Galavant centres on handsome Prince Galavant’s (Joshua Sasse) quest for revenge against the king  (Timothy Omundson) who stole away his one true love (Mallory Jansen).

Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken will score the music for this new series. Vinnie Jones, Karen David and Luke Youngblood also star.

Ioan Gruffudd is Dr. Henry Morgan, New York City’s top medical examiner who also just happens to be immortal. Assisted by Detective Jo Martinez (Alana De La Garza), this supernatural-tinged drama explores Henry’s long and colorful life through each of his new cases. Jennifer Gwartz, Judd Hirsch, Barbara Eve Harris, Joel David Moore and Donnie Keshwarz also star.

BLACK-ISH

Anthony Anderson stars as an upper-middle-class black man who struggles to raise his children with a sense of cultural identity despite constant contradictions and obstacles from his liberal wife (Tracee Ellis Ross), old-school father (Laurence Fishburne) and his assimilated, color-blind kids.

Both Anderson and Fishburne executive-produce. Marsai Martin, Miles Brown, Marcus Scribner and Yara Shahidi also star.

 

SELFIE

Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan plays a self-obsessed, twenty something who’s very public and humiliating breakup goes viral when it is recorded, in this My Fair Lady interpretation. However when the video makes her an Internet celebrity for all the wrong reasons, she hires marketing expert Henry (John Cho) to help restore her image.

David Harewood, Tim Peper, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Allyn Rachel also star.

 

CRISTELA

 

In her sixth year of law school, Cristela (Cristela Alonzo) is finally on the brink of landing her first big (unpaid) internship at a prestigious law firm. The only problem is that her pursuit of success is more ambitious than her traditional Mexican-American family thinks is appropriate. She’s stuck straddling the old culture she’s trying to modernize at home with her working-class family and the modern world she’s trying to embrace in her professional career. Breakout comedian Cristela Alonzo stars in this hilarious comedy about laughing your way down the path to the new American dream.

“Cristela” stars Cristela Alonzo as Cristela, Carlos Ponce as Felix, Terri Hoyos as Natalia, Andrew Leeds as Josh and Sam McMurray as Trent.

“Cristela” was written by Cristela Alonzo and Kevin Hench. Executive producers are Kevin Hench, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements and Shawn Levy. “Cristela” is produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television.
