Black Bolt is a Perfect Metaphor For the Emotionally Withdrawn Man

By on August 30, 2017

Black Bolt, a man with a voice so powerful that even his slightest whisper could destroy a city, is the perfect metaphor for the emotionally withdrawn man.

That’s according to Anson Mount, the actor who takes on the role of King of the Inhumans in ABC’s latest Marvel project this fall.

Speaking recently about his character Mount broke down the complicated relationship between Black Bolt and Queen Medusa (Serinda Swan), saying “The character of Medusa first came into Black Bolt’s life very early, when he was locked away because of the power of his voice. He had no translator and she became that for him. But as their relationship develops, she’s not just the translator of his voice, she’s the translator of a man who is maybe a little bit too locked away emotionally. She’s phenomenally patient with him, and I think that’s what he loves about her.”

Marvel’s Inhumans explores the comic book adventures of the royal family, who after being splintered by a military coup, escape their home on the moon only to find themselves in Hawaii, planet Earth. There they must learn to negotiate this lush new world and its surprising inhabitants, but also find a way to reunite with each other and return to their home before their way of life is destroyed forever.

“The character of Black Bolt is fascinating, and really smartly drawn,” continued Mount. “He’s a king, who, because of his power, or affliction, literally cannot use his voice because he’s aware of the danger of his own authority.”

On the challenges of taking on a character who is not only a beloved Marvel hero, but also a non-speaking role, Mount explained “I was immediately interested when I heard the name Black Bolt for a number of reasons. Number one I love the character. He’s one of the most beloved characters in Marvel. But also the challenge of playing what’s ostensibly the lead of a show and not being able to speak, that got me right there. I like challenges. I try not to do jobs where I’m going to be bored.”

Challenges are one thing Mount shares in common with his character. The premeire episode kicks off amid a staged royal coup by brother Maximus (Game of Thrones’ Iwan Rheon) that catapults Black Bolt, Medusa and the Royal Court to Earth, where they discover their battle has only just begun.

Catch the strong but silent Black Bolt in action in two back to back episodes of Marvel’s Inhumans Friday September 29 on ABC.

Marvel’s Inhumans stars Anson Mount as Black Bolt, Iwan Rheon as Maximus, Serinda Swan as Medusa, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, Ken Leung as Karnak, Ellen Woglom in an as yet undisclosed role, Sonya Balmores as Auran and Mike Moh as Triton.
