There’s a devil may care attitude to The Blacklist’s fifth season.

If it’s not evident by Red’s weirdly colorful ensemble in episode 2, then it’s definitely obvious in the content of two recent new sneak peek clips from the upcoming premiere.

Season 5 will see Red (James Spader) and Liz (Megan Boone) going back to doing what they do best. Sorta. Following Red’s unfortunate brush with Mr Kaplan (may she rest in peace, one day to mysteriously return from the grave and raise hell) his finances have been decimated, and his empire is in ruins. The fallout has left our favorite criminal mastermind to trade hunting down blacklisters to the less glamorous sport of hunting down bail dodgers for hard cash.

Liz is not happy. Harold is definitely not happy. But Red seems quite amused by it all.

The premiere, “Smokey Putnum” will see Red coming up with a clever way to simultaneously earn cash and deliver a new Blacklister to the Task Force. Meanwhile, as Liz faces the new reality of working alongside her father, Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) finds himself in a precarious position and Tom (Ryan Eggold) weighs his options.

In the clips below, Red outlines his plan (involving a trip to the circus!) to Liz, and expertly dodges Harold’s concerns. He’s right. He is more irresistible than fried butter.

Meanwhile as the team catches up to the fact that Red really is Liz’ father, and wonder what that might mean for their structure going forward, Aram (Amir Arison) and Samar (Mozhan Marnò) debate the virtues of keeping their burgeoning relationship secret.

NBC teases the season ahead as follows:

Feeling surprisingly unencumbered, Raymond Reddington is back and in the process of rebuilding his criminal empire. His lust for life is ever-present as he lays the foundation for this new enterprise — one that he’ll design with Elizabeth Keen by his side. Living with the reality that Red is her father, Liz finds herself torn between her role as an FBI agent and the temptation to act on her more criminal instincts. In a world where the search for Blacklisters has become a family trade, Red will undoubtedly reclaim his moniker as the “Concierge of Crime.”

The Blacklist returns  Wednesday, Sept. 27 (8:00-9:00 pm) on NBC.
