If FX’s The Strain had called it quits after last season’s epic season finale, it would have made for a bleak but ultimately fitting end to the series.

Following a prolonged battle against the Master and his demonstrably unstoppable hoard of strigoi, it seemed inevitable that Eph, Fet, Setrakian, Dutch and Gus would at some point, stumble, fail or simply become too tired to carry on the fight.

That moment finally occurred in the season 3 finale when Eph’s son Zach (aka the most obnoxious kid on TV) triggered a nuclear bomb which effectively loosed the apocalypse on Earth giving the Master and his creations free reign to slaughter humanity’s remnants during the fallout-filled daylight hours.

Game over? Not quite. Season 4 sees our unsung heroes continuing to fight, albeit in the shadows of a strange new order in which humanity faces the ultimate subjugation.

Can this series snatch even a scrap of victory from the (quite literal) jaws of defeat? We would certainly like to think so, but that apocalypse is looking awfully bleak in the official teaser trailer below.

The Strain returns for a fourth and final season on Sunday, July 16 at 10 pm on FX.

As the fourth and final season begins, nine months have passed. The world has fallen into darkness, and the strigoi are in control. The explosion at the end of season three triggered a global nuclear apocalypse. The resulting nuclear winter liberated the strigoi, allowing them to move about during daytime, and allowing the Master to establish a totalitarian regime. Preying on the fears of the populace, the Master and his minions have created an unsettling alliance in “The Partnership.” The majority of humans are now working for the strigoi, operating with a single understanding — collaborate or die.

With the world in disarray and our heroes disbanded, each of them will have to overcome personal hardship and defy death for even the smallest chance at fighting back… All the while, the Master reigns supreme, furthering his scheme for the end of the world as we know it. In the face of annihilation…do our heroes have what it takes to save humankind?

The ensemble cast stars Corey Stoll, David Bradley, Jonathan Hyde, Kevin Durand, Ruta Gedmintas, Miguel Gomez, Richard Sammel, Max Charles and Rupert Penry-Jones.
