NBC and Sony Pictures TV have officially approved the storyline for a bittersweet 2 hour Timeless wrap up.

The 2 back to back installments will be directed by John Showalter, director of some of the show’s most memorable episodes including “The Capture of Benedict Arnold”, “The Murder of Jesse James”, “Hollywoodland” and “The General”.

The first hour will be penned by Lauren Greer (co-writer “The Day Reagan Was Shot”), with Arika Lisanne (writer “Stranded”, “The Red Scare” co-writer “The War To End All Wars” and “”The Day Reagan Was Shot.”) taking writing duties on hour 2.

The news comes with a dash disappointment for some fans of the beleaguered time travel series who were holding out hope the show might yet be picked up for a third season by another source.

However, those hopes faded when series creator Eric Kripke tweeted over the summer that a handful of additional episodes represented “our best shot” at providing real and lasting closure on the scifi series and its much loved characters.

Season 2 ended on a spectacular cliffhanger which saw fan favorite Rufus (Malcolm Barrett) shot and fatally killed, only for future versions of Wyatt (Matt Lanter) and Lucy (Abigail Spencer) to later pop into present day with a plan to go back in time and rescue him.

However, following a lengthy phase of negotiations between Sony and NBC, a decision not to renew the show for a third season threw Malcom’s fate, and the hopes of many fans, into turmoil.

Shawn Ryan, series co-showrunner wrote at the time: “This is a sad day for the writers, actors, crew and especially the viewers of Timeless. We are all extremely proud of what we made and know that it was more than just a show for so many of our fans. If NBC is sincere in wanting a two-hour movie to give much needed closure to our amazing Timeless fans, we are ready to make it. We don’t want the journeys of Lucy, Wyatt, Rufus and the others to end yet.”

Shooting on the back to back episodes is set to kick off in September with a final air date pencilled in for December 2018.
