One of TBS’s upcoming series, Snowpiercer, had its official debut at Comic Con, bringing along footage of the pilot, and introducing cast members to the audience.

Sitting on the panel was Creator and Executive Producer Graeme Manson, and stars Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs, Mickey Sumner, Lena Hall, Alison Wright, and Steven Ogg.

After seeing clips from the show, the panel began talking about the show, and what viewers could expect in the first season. Here are some things discussed:

  1. The series is based on the graphic novels and feature films of the same name.
  2. It takes place seven years after the end of the world. Humanity tried to correct climate change and screwed it up, instead plunging the world into the next ice age.
  3. Connelly plays Melanie Cavill who is head of hospitality on the train. She’s required to maintain order, but has lots of secrets. She lives at the front of the train.
  4. Diggs plays Andre Layton, who is a ‘Tailie’ which are a class of people who jumped on the end of the train, where living conditions are not great. Before the end of the world, he was a cop, and eventually is granted access to the other classes due to his skillset. He hasn’t seen any other part of the train in the full seven years he’s been on it.
  5. Wright plays Ruth who works with Melanie, and believes fully in Mr. Wilfred, who put together the train.
  6. Sumner plays Bess Till, a security officer on the train.
  7. Hall plays Miss Audrey, an empath and a performer. She talks passengers through their grief so they can survive on the train.
  8. Ogg plays Pike, who is a Tailie with Andre.
  9. The show is different than the movie. While the movie moved from the tail forward, the show will spend time everywhere so viewers can understand what’s going on.
  10. Connelly loved the idea of the story, and her part was very compelling and complex.
  11. Panelists agreed that TV is like a living document. It adopts as you go along.
  12. Viewers get to see the happenings of the train through the eyes of Layton.
  13. Both Diggs and Hall have a musical theatre background (though Diggs pointed out that Hall’s resume is much more impressive than his) and Hall will be singing in the show.
  14. It’s a very technically challenging show, and the cast agreed that the sets are amazing. On the sound stage, they had five fully built train cars that you could walk straight through – all of which could sway like an actual train.
  15. All fighting on the show is close combat, as there are very few guns on the train.

Based on the scenes shown during the panel, Snowpiercer looks like it could be an interesting show – definitely worth watching the pilot at the very least. To prepare, I’m going to watch the movie, as even the creator mentioned how well it was done.

Snowpiercer premieres on TBS in the spring of 2020.
