SUITS: Hard Lessons are Leaned in

Despite those season premiere assurances that "This isn't a prison movie" some Suits fans found themselves questioning that assertion in last night's episode "Accounts Payable."

Corrupt guards, evil henchmen, a powerful con with the run of the prison, a firm but likeable prison counsellor and an almost-shivving set a Shawshank-like tone for an hour in which Mike struggled to find his feet behind bars, while Harvey tried to remove the threat of (possibly murderous?) inmate Frank Gallo, while keeping Rachel in the dark.

While Mike was fighting for his life, Jessica was fighting for her firm, electing to use PSL's partner buy-in fund to settle the firm's class action law suit.

And while the action rankled with the firm's former partners, one in particular felt the sting more than others. Jack Soloff's plight placed Jessica in an untenable position. To personally give him the money he needed to buy his way into a partnership with Robert Zane's company would open her up to other partners seeking redress in the same way. To leave Jack out in the cold, would surely ruin his career.

Overall, it was a night of learning how best to play ball on both sides of the prison bars.

Donna is Black in the Inside?

Ok, who did Donna date for seven months, what is her song, and is that enough to make someone black on the inside?

Also, the way Donna appears in Harvey’s doorway to remind him of his own humanity at odd intervals sometimes makes us wonder if she’s a figment of his imagination.

Harvey’s Tell

Was it just us, or were you expecting Harvey to to reveal the loss of his duck painting as a clever ruse? We can’t help but imagine Elliott Stemple, painting tucked under his arm, feeling a little like the boy in Jack and the Beanstalk, as he returns to his clients to explain why an abstract paining of a duck is so much better than 10 million dollars as a settlement.

Of course, the painting is Harvey’s last good memory of his mother and is probably his last reminder of a simpler and happier time. It’s therefore an interesting story point to see it stripped away from him now in particular. Jessica may have seen the value in expressing a softer side this week, but are we going to see a leaner, meaner Harvey Specter going forward?

Is Mike going to sneak into the warden’s office and pump classical music through the prison sound system? What are the odds on how long Mike’s new friend Kevin will survive? Will Mike get a prison tattoo as part of his learning to blend in? Is Rachel wearing Mike’s shirt in the office too?

Suits continues Wednedsays on USA Network.
