It’s a heartbreaking day for fans of NBC’s time-travel drama Timeless. In a case of history repeating itself the show was announced as effectively canceled today.

NBC first canceled Timeless in May 2017, but reversed the decision following tense negotiations with Sony over licensing fees.

The news was shared on Twitter by series co-showrunner Shawn Ryan who wrote:

“This is a sad day for the writers, actors, crew and especially the viewers of Timeless. We are all extremely proud of what we made and know that it was more than just a show for so many of our fans. It became a passion and a cause for many of them. We’re proud of the impact @NBCTimeless had on so many people – the students who embraced history as a result of our show, the people who were inspired by our stories of inclusion and acceptance. We saw your tweets and were inspired by you.”

The news comes mere days before the options of the actors on the series are set to expire.

Meanwhile, Deadline suggests that a two-hour wrap up movie may still be on the cards as a way to give fans closure on two seasons.

“If NBC is sincere in wanting a two-hour movie to give much needed closure to our amazing @NBCTimeless fans, we are ready to make it,” said Ryan. “We don’t want the journeys of Lucy, Wyatt, Rufus and the others to end yet.”

Series creator Eric Kripke also commented that, as Sony has failed to find another home for the beleaguered series, a wrap-up movie may well represent the best chance to present closure to the story and its characters.

“Gutted by this, guys, I know you are too,” Kripke tweeted, Friday. “Behind the scenes, Sony has been trying hard to set it up elsewhere, but no luck so far. I think this 2 hour movie is our best shot. We’re ready to make it if @nbc really wants it. Let ’em know how you feel. #clockblockers”
