CASTLE Mid Season Finale Review: Castle and Beckett are Back Where They Belong, As

By Geannie Bastian

But first, the case. I know, I'm sorry. Forgive me?

Basically an entertainer on board a cruise ship was murdered because while she was attempting to expose the fact that ship was mishandling its waste, she discovered there was a pretty scary reason: It was being used to smuggle pure uncut heroin. Naturally, they can't let her live with that information, and so she becomes the case of the week.

Finding out who done it is relatively simple, though it does involve Castle having go undercover as a wealthy passenger who wants to dance in the show for info. Classically funny, although apparently Martha didn't teach him much of anything in terms of stage skills. Pity.

Martha's a bit worried she didn't teach him much of anything else either, because it's at this point Castle decides that with the murderer caught, he needs to figure out what the heck is going on with the text Kate got the night before, when she hit the pause on their time in. Martha isn't sold, but of course who Castle goes ahead and the fun really begins.

Too much, too Soon?

That’s what a lot of the fan questioning has been about in the wake of the episode last night. Was it too simple for Castle to just take her back? Allow me to make the case for camp no, if you will.

For starters, this goes right along what was telegraphed last week in the conversation between Castle and Ryan. The writer tells the detective to come clean and apologize, and then both sides should let it go. Which is exactly what happened here. Acknowledge, Apologize, and Accept – a good AAA policy for life that will serve you every time you stall out on the road of life.

But even beyond that, what she is saying here is exactly what Castle has been wanting her to say all along. It’s Castle who has been saying, “You need me,” in a refrain all season long, and his motives for looking into the case weren’t even really curiosity so much as being worried about his wife and her safety.

Once she knows that too, and faced with the idea of her continuing to have to go it alone when neither of them wants that, why wouldn’t Castle choose the two things he wants most – his wife back, and a chance to help her through this – given that opportunity? He gains nothing he desires by holding himself apart from her now.

And, at least we get to leave on the note of the two of them together and happy, and probably planning some pretty strong shenanigans for next year. I can’t wait – but I’m going to have to. Early reports suggesting the show will be back in January have turned out to be false. Castle returns February 1, 2016.

In the meantime, I leave you with a wish for a healthy and happy season of celebration, wherever and however that may be, and remind you to enjoy life, love and TV – and be kind to one another. Until 2016, Castle fans!
