“I think a good story is a good story,” said David Tennant at FOX’s Upfront Presentations earlier today.

Speaking to press about new FOX drama Gracepoint, Tennant (Doctor Who) and co-star Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) described the US adaptation of the critically acclaimed British series Broadchurch as a “universal story.”

“Wherever that story lands, people will be drawn to it and will want to come back for more,” said Tennant, expressing his confidence in the US adaptation of the material.

“I think this is a very universal story. People will want to come back and find out what happens. It’s as simple as that. Good writing is good writing, and I think this is extremely good writing.”

The new 10 episode event series will air Thursdays on FOX this Fall. Anna Gunn filled us in on the show’s premise.

Gracepoint centers on the tragic death of a young boy and the impact it has on a small town, and how the town deals with the impact of the tragedy, what it uncovers about the people of the town, and how each individual person deals with it in their own way, how they overlap and how they meld and mesh together in that story.”

The drama kicks off when Gunn’s character Detective Ellie Mills finds herself thrust into an uncomfortable partnership with the experienced but secretive Detective Emmett Carver (Tennant) during the investigation of a murder which shakes a small rural town to the core.

“Ellie Miller is a Mom. She’s happily married. She has two boys,” explains Gunn. “She’s a detective who is very much expecting to come back to a promotion which she has worked very hard for, for many years. Then she finds on her first day back from vacation that the job has been handed over to somebody that she’s never met. She has to immediately begin working with him on the very day that this tragedy occurs.”

Gracepoint will air Thursdays (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) this fall on FOX.

Meanwhile, with a second season now underway, David Tennant will also return to Broadchurch on ITV in Britain.

Fox are not planning to show it in the UK so please sign the petition at the above website and read what was in the emails I received when I asked them about it. Thanks.

When I first heard about this, I was incredulous and very very skeptical. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, in other words. Broadchurch was so incredibly brilliant on every single level, I could NOT understand why anyone would want to mess with it. Why not just import it on BBC America and/or PBS? What’s the point of a complete remake? And why on earth make us watch one of our favorite Scottish actors fake an American accent? The trailer changed everything. I watched it and was immediately pulled into the story all over again. If the tiny bit in that preview is any indication of the overall quality of the production, I’m sold. And I will be watching this.

      I’m optimistic about Gracepoint.
ScreenSpy chatted with FOX’s Chairman of Entertainment, Kevin Reilly yesterday at the Upfronts and he said (and I quote) “Many of you asked two things about Broadchurch. Is Gracepoint going to be as good as Broadchurch? The answer is yes. And secondly, is there a new twist and a new ending, and the answer is yes, there is. So, I’m thrilled at the way this has turned out. It’s really an excellent cast, headed by David Tennant, and Anna Gunn in her first role after winning the Emmy for Breaking Bad. That’s going to be a very good night of television on Thursdays.”

David is an amazing actor and I have no doubt he’ll shine equally well in this adaptation.
