Video Interview: Hayley Atwell Talks Agent Carter’s Double Life

By on January 1, 2015

(ABC/Kelsey McNeal) HAYLEY ATWELL

Marvel’s Agent Carter is about to make a splash on ABC on Jan. 6.

Starring Hayley Atwell (yes it’s really Peggy Carter from the first Captain America movie), and set in 1946, the new series follows Carter’s bid to be taken seriously as a valued member of the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve).

However, following the return of WW2’s finest, Peggy finds herself stuck behind a desk doing administrative work when she would rather be back out in the field, putting her impressive skills into play and taking down the bad guys.

Set against a backdrop of inflexible gender roles in which she is frustrated not to be fulfilling her destiny, and heartbroken at losing the love of her life Steve Rogers (the series is set following the events of the first Captain America movie), Peggy’s struggle is an uphill one.

However when Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) finds himself framed for unleashing his deadliest weapons to anyone willing to pony up the cash, he contacts Peggy – the only person he can trust – to track down those responsible, giving her the chance to finally prove herself.

But if caught partaking in secret missions for Stark, Peggy could be targeted as a traitor and spend the rest of her days in prison – or worse.

In the following video interview Hayley Atwell sets the scene for this new series in addition to describing the psychological and emotional impact of Peggy’s double life and more.

Marvel’s Agent Carter premieres Tuesday, January 6, 8:00 – 10:00 p.m., ET on ABC.

The series also stars James D’Arcy as Edwin Jarvis, Chad Michael Murray as Agent Jack Thompson, Enver Gjokaj as Agent Daniel Sousa and Shea Whigham as Chief Roger Dooley.
