The Van Helsing panel at Comic Con this year was different than usual in a couple of aspects. First, series star Kelly Overton was calling in through Skype due to her pregnancy, so she was on screen the whole time, and Neal McDonough, who recently joined the cast, also called in through Skype as he was on the set of his other show, Project Blue Book. As such, there were times that the two actors were on the screen at the same time as those in the room. Second, many of the panelists were new to the show, bringing fresh blood to the panel, as well as stories about joining the show.

On the panel were Executive Producers Jonathan Walker, Michael Frislev, and Chad Oakes, as well as stars Aleks Paunovic, Richard Harmon, Tricia Helfer, Keeya King, Nicole Munoz, Christopher Heyerdahl and Jennifer Cheon-Garcia. Here are a few of the things talked about during the panel.

  1. King did a ton of training to prepare for her character, including gun training.
  2. King and Munoz joked that they were like mini John Wicks
  3. Heyerdahl said the horns he wears are really heavy, and he’s in the makeup chair approximately 2.5 hours a day.
  4. When the cast was joking about creating a musical, Munoz came up with the name, “Van Hel-sings” and I’m sure something related to this will turn up on the internet soon.
  5. Paunovic is the practical joker on the set, and to celebrate Walker’s debut as showrunner, Paunovic printed 60 giant cutouts of Walker’s head which everyone had on the first day, and Walker said those cutouts still show up on set all the time.
  6. Harmon said that his character was a lot of fun to play, and he was gifted a lot of freedom to create the character. Additionally, he was grateful for the very welcoming environment of the set.
  7. Wrestler Big Show Paul will be making his debut this season. Paunovic was the one who made the guest spot happen by tweeting Paul to see if he’d want to be on the show.
  8. While on set, Paul signed autographs for anyone who asked, and even hired a coffee truck for the cast and crew.
  9. Helfer assumes that everyone will hate her character Dracula.
  10. Heyerdahl was the only cast member who knew who the murderer was in season one.
  11. Jonathan Scarfe directs an episode this season.
  12. Almost everyone agreed that the best fight scene thus far was between Ivory and Scarlett.

Overall, season four seems like it’s going to be a wild ride. Not only are there familiar faces like Helfer and Harmon joining the cast, but the stories look to take the characters to places they’ve never been before.

Season four of Van Helsing will be premiering on Syfy in the fall of 2019.
