Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes

The BBC released the first official picture from Sherlock’s upcoming third season last night.

“The Empty Hearse” will premiere in London on December 15 at the British Film Institute. The special screening will feature members of the cast and crew who will take part in a question and answer session following the screening – although attendees have yet to be announced.

The premiere, following the structure of previous seasons, will comprise three episodes – “The Empty Hearse” (by Mark Gatiss), “The Sign of Three” (by Stephen Thompson) and “His Last Vow” (by Show runner Steven Moffat).

Lars Mikkelsen will join Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman this season as a new nemesis for Holmes.

Amanda Abbington is also set to take on the role of Mary Morstan, a love interest for Watson.
