CBS’ Supergirl Casts Its Lead

A Glee alum has managed to nab the iconic DC Comics role for CBS’ highly anticipated series, Supergirl.

The network has cast Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, who was born on planet Krypton and fled during its destruction.

After her arrival on Earth, Kara is taken in by a foster family who teaches her how to be careful with her powers. At 24, Kara feels un-empowered after having to repress her innate abilities for so long.

When an unexpected disaster pushes her to use those powers in the public sphere, an exhilarated Kara embraces her gifts for the first time. In time she begins to help the people of her city, earning her the name of Supergirl.

In addition to her role as Glee‘s Marley, Benoist’s credits include a supporting role in 2014’s Whiplash, as well as appearances on Homeland and The Good Wife.

One among many actresses who auditioned for the role, Benoist reportedly beat out The Vampire Diaries and The Originals star Claire Holt for the the part according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The series pilot was penned by No Ordinary Family‘s Ali Adler and Greg Berlanti (Arrow). Both Alder and Berlanti are slated to will serve as executive producers along with Berlanti Productions’ Sarah Schechter and Warner Bros. TV.
