David O Russell is no longer developing the movie adaptation of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, it was reported by Deadline yesterday. Apparently Sony Pictures is still keen on the movie, and is in the process of hiring a new writer to work from the original draft done by Thomas Dean Donnelly & Joshua Oppenheimer.
The news has come as a relief to some. Fans of the Unchartedseries were left scratching their heads when Russell announced themes of family, New York gangsters and more, none of which were present in the Uncharted series for PS3. Rumors of Mark Wahlberg playing the role of Drake also left many on the fence.
The news may give genre fans some hope. Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle) and Joe Flanigan (Stargate Atlantis) were two names suggested by fans as potential Drakes via internet campaigns.
In the meantime, fans of the PS3 series can look forward to Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception scheduled to be released in November 2011.
