“This is what freedom looks like.”
The Handmaid’s Tale finished its Emmy-winning first season pretty much in keeping with the novel that birthed it.
Elisabeth Moss’ Offred finally secured her freedom with Nick’s assistance, entering the black van after a leap of faith convinced her to trust him, all the while not knowing if it was there to take her to interrogation, punishment and death, or on to freedom.
A new season 2 trailer shows Offred is finally free, and now going by her real name, June Osborne. Pregnant with Nick’s child, June is now caught between two worlds — one in which she joins a growing resistance to Gilead’s harsh rule, and another where she is desperately seeking to reunite with her child, knowing Commander Waterford and his wife Serena Joy are aware of the child’s whereabouts, and will likely be punished for June’s disappearance.
“Gilead is within you,” is a favorite saying of Aunt Lydia. In season 2, Offred and all our characters will fight against or succumb to this dark truth.
The show returns to Hulu on April 25 with two new episodes.
