You may know him best as nervous Norman Bates from A&E’s Bates Motel, but Freddie Highmore is about to take on an entirely new persona tonight as he steps into the shoes of a hopeful young surgical resident in ABC’s new medical drama The Good Doctor.
The catch is that Highmore’s Shaun Murphy is both autistic — and a savant — meaning that although he may not be able to charm his patients with a reassuring bedside manner, he might just be the most brilliant surgeon the prestigious St. Bonaventure hospital’s surgical unit has ever seen. If they’re willing to give him a chance, that is.
While childhood friend and confidante Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) of the hospital’s medical board is firmly on Shaun’s side, it will take more than his vote of confidence for Shaun to be accepted by his peers and mentors.
Firstly, Shaun will have to face the board and present a strong case on his own behalf. However, as the following clip reveals, Shaun’s chances of wowing his peers are thrown in jeopardy when he makes a life or death detour in the airport terminal to save a life.
Catch Highmore’s Dr Shaun in action below.
The Good Doctor airs Monday, Sept. 25 (10:01-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC.
