Graceland’s O-Mouth: A Study in How to Have Your Cake and Eat it Too

Tonight’s Graceland episode “O-Mouth” was a case study in how to have your cake and eat it too. Of the three storylines explored, Mike’s seduction of Nigerian crime lord Bello, and the ongoing FBI investigation into Briggs possible crime connections played second fiddle to Charlie and Briggs’ almost-sexcapade.
“O-Mouth” saw longtime friends and one time lovers Briggs and Charlie getting busy in a hotel room and then at an insanely odd moment deciding against it, treating us all to a raunchy sex scene (complete with crashing lampshades and worried furniture) but without any happy endings.
And it wasn’t the only time we were presented with either or scenarios that played out both possibilities over the course of the episode. Early on, we were treated to Mike staunchly defending Briggs to the FBI as he told them bluntly, “Briggs is a complicated guy who does things in an unorthodox way, but he gets results.” (Seriously, is there anyone in the house who doesn’t have a crush on this guy?) But then later we also got to see Mike agreeing to dangle some tempting bait Briggs’ way, in the hope that his mentor might trip up and pilfer from the enormous pile of drugs headed into the country via submarine a couple of episodes down the line. Mike, and the audience, are working both sides on this one.
And let’s not forget that opening scene in which Mike stumbles across what he thinks is Charlie shooting up in her Graceland bedroom. He’s wrong of course, but by the episode’s end, Charlie is shooting up for real, and the stakes are suddenly a lot higher.
Of course this give-em-what-they-want-and-more scatter gun approach had one obvious exception. After one needle too many Whistler overdosed and died in the grungy toilet of the dealer the team is currently trying to crack, leaving Charlie panicked, guilt-ridden and above all desperate.
The scene is set for some major fallout from Charlie’s impetuous decision in next week’s “Hair of the Dog” which airs Thursday July 18th 10/9c on USA Network. Also submarines …
More cake anyone?
