Following on from criticism of Game of Thrones’ bad lighting comes Coffee Cup-Gate, in which eagle-eyed Game of Thrones fans spotted an aberration in Sunday’s episode in the form of a craft services coffee cup.

The offending cup can be seen in “The Last of The Starks” in the celebration scene in Winterfell during which Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) observes Jon (Kit Harington) being both teased and praised for his heroic actions — including riding a dragon — during the battle.

The placement of the modern day paper cup on the banquet table seems an obvious gaffe by the Thrones production team, and fans were not slow in sharing their discovery over social media.

However while “The Long Night” cinematographer Fabian Wagner responded to criticism over last week’s lighting with what might be construed as a huffy “A lot of the problem is that a lot of people don’t know how to tune their TVs properly,” and “I know it wasn’t too dark because I shot it,” in this instance HBO is firmly behind the fans.

An official statement released to ScreenSpy following Sunday’s episode reads:

In response to inquiries from those who saw a craft services coffee cup in Sunday night’s episode of GAME OF THRONES, HBO states, “The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake.  Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.”

Game of Thrones continues Sunday May 12 at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on HBO.

The as yet unnamed episode has an estimated running time of one hour and twenty minutes.
