CBS’ upcoming Sherlock Holmes drama Elementary continues to makes waves with its latest casting addition. Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels, Kill Bill) has signed on to play the role of Doctor Watson, opposite Johnny Lee Miller (Trainspotting, Dexter) in the title role.
Elementary was initially slated to be a US adaptation of the phenomenally successful British Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch (War Horse, Star Trek 2) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, The Office) but when talks broke down CBS announced it would continue with its own version.
Elementary is a modern day take on Sherlock Holmes, set in New York, while Sherlock is a modern day take on Sherlock Holmes set in London. See the similarities? Sue Vertue, Sherlock producer did too, stating recently that “We have been in touch with CBS and informed them that we will be looking at their finished pilot very closely for any infringement of our rights.”
Lucy Liu is the first female Doctor Watson in the history of Holmes on TV. Bet the guys at the BBC didn’t see that one coming.
